No idea. It was barely a plot. Seemed like someone just wanted an opportunity to comment on the Tupac hologram or something.
I keep hearing people say American Dad is NOT BAD but I saw it way back when and found it unimpressive and I am pretty sure it is still a Seth MacFarlane show so...
Also, it sounded like they were going to completely destroy The Simpsons universe at the end of this season because there was supposed to be an episode about the family somehow visiting Kang and Kodos' planet outside of a Halloween episode. But now on Wikipedia someone has changed the final episode of the season to something completely unrelated and I can't find many references to this Kang and Kodos episode anywhere anymore. I wonder if they wussed out/realized it was a terrible idea. It doesn't really seem like they worry too much about doing terrible ideas anymore though.

I think the Bart and Grandpa plot couldn't worked on it's own with some tweaking, the Lisa one was added most likely because her voice actor's contract states she gets lines every episode or something.
American Dad started off as a Family Guy clone but came into it's own as the show went on. It's a little rough during the first season but improves a lot, the holiday episodes are always great. Yeah, it's a Seth MacFarlane show but I believe most of the writing staff came from Futurama so he's not doing much of anything other than voices for it.
It's a damn shame what's happened to the Simpsons, it's like SNL where every five or so years you get a new cast (in this case, writers). Sometimes you get a few good episodes but mostly it's garbage. They could pull the plug whenever, it's past its time, I'll miss it but there's always reruns. Hell I watched "Homer at the Bat" the other day and it was still as good as it was when it first aired.
I just have so little interest in American Dad. It's probably kind of fine. I'm sure it manages to be witty at times. Family Guy (at least at one time) managed it too. I just don't see myself giving it a huge chance ever.
I really find the current version of The Simpsons this close to completely worthless. There are occasionally a few good laughs in episodes but it's completely eaten its own head when it comes to plots and characters. I think there's been genuinely only one straight-up good episode in I don't even know how many years and it was "The Book Job" from the previous season. But that was some fluke where outsiders came in and wrote it or something.
